“It’s all about the one barrel and the undiscovered delights within”
The Royal Wine Selection continues an historical tradition whose roots go back to the Bavarian royal family. The best wineries in the world always granted the Bavarian royal family one special barrel. With this custom in mind, His Royal Highness Prinz Luitpold von Bayern and distributors Schlumberger have entered into a joint project to once again seek out this special barrel.
The first wine of the Royal Wine Selection was personally selected by Ferdinand Fürst zu Castell-Castell, who chose the Castell 1659 Silvaner Cuvée Privée.

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINZ LUITPOLD VON BAYERN AND FERDINAND FÜRST ZU CASTELL-CASTELL

His Royal Highness Prinz Luitpold von Bayern
Luitpold Prinz von Bayern, how did the idea for the Royal Wine Selection come about?
Throughout my life I have always enjoyed good food and good drinks. I grew familiar with a great many extraordinarily interesting wineries and distillers, even when I was still very young. It helped enormously that my parents and grandparents always maintained a well-kept cellar. However, when invited by friends I noticed that there were often large gaps in the selections of classic drinks. Hence the idea of putting together a well-balanced varied collection of interesting drinks, that meet the standards of a royal cellar.
Luitpold Prinz von Bayern, who is the target group of the Royal Wine Selection?
The Royal Wine Selection is about people who cherish traditions, people for whom maximum enjoyment is an integral part of their lifestyle. Our selection speaks to wine connoisseurs and epicures who appreciate a good wine and, above all, something truly special. People who see themselves as connoisseurs and love the classically timeless; people who celebrate pleasure and enjoy luxury and those special moments in life.
Luitpold Prinz von Bayern, what does tradition mean to you?
Without the experience of the past, there is no reasonable future. Having as a base a cultural value system and the security that comes with it, is what is needed as the basis for exploring new things. Drinks are an important part of our culture and, to the delight of those who drink the result, the production process has been refined and improved over centuries, to obtain the best from the given conditions. I would like to share this joy in the variety of different drinks with others.
Ferdinand Fürst zu Castell-Castell, how did it come about that you were chosen to select the first wine for the Royal Wine Selection?
Our houses are connected by a history going back centuries. Our Family has been cultivating wine for almost 800 years, making Domäne Castell one of Germany’s oldest wineries. Just like the Bavarian royal family, we cultivate tradition and it is a firm part of our lives. This means that we fit perfectly into the concept of the Royal Wine Selection and, of course, the high quality of our wines is self- evident. We are passionate about viticulture and are convinced that the future belongs to the Silvaner as the grape variety of Franconia. The selection of the Castell 1659 Silvaner Cuvée Privée as the first wine of the Royal Wine Selection is an expression of this.
Ferdinand Fürst zu Castell-Castell, what is it that distinguishes the first wine of the Royal Wine Selection that you have chosen?
For the first wine of the Royal Wine Selection I have chosen the Castell 1659 Silvaner Cuvée Privée. This exquisite, classically dry Franconian Silvaner brings together grapes from the best lots of the Fürstlich Castell’sches Domänenamt, making it perfect for the very first barrel of the Royal Wine Selection. Grown on gypsum marl soils, it embodies minerality, spice and velvet and is a true delight – and more than a brilliant food companion. The year 2018 was exceptional, with a wet winter and a very hot summer with very little rainfall, which led to an early grape harvest. The wine was then aged in a large wooden barrel and kept on the lees for a lengthy period of time.
